How to add a custom wrap in Tesla Paint Shop

Paint Shop renders a custom skin on the car's centre display. It takes one file, it has four hard rules, and it does not tell you which rule you broke — which is why most failed uploads look identical.

Checked against Tesla’s published requirements · 26 October 2026

What Paint Shop actually does

It is a display feature, not a paint job. The car maps your image onto its own 3D model and shows that model on the centre screen. Nothing on the bodywork changes, and nobody outside the car sees it. If you want film on the actual panels, that is a separate job at a wrap shop and they will need a different file than the one Paint Shop accepts.

The four rules

RuleWhat it means
PNG onlyNot JPEG, not WebP. Renaming a JPEG to .png does not work — the car reads the file, not the extension.
512×512 to 1024×1024Square. The template is 1024×1024 and the mapping assumes that aspect ratio, so a non-square image stretches.
1 MB or smallerA busy 1024² design can exceed this. Reduce detail, not resolution — shrinking the image breaks the panel alignment.
Filename up to 30 charactersLetters, numbers, underscores, dashes and spaces only. No dots beyond the extension.

Up to 10 wraps from the app and 10 from a USB drive. Beyond that the extras are simply not listed.

Add it from the Tesla app

Requires app version 4.59.0 or later.

  1. Open the app and go to Creations.
  2. Choose Wrap, then Upload.
  3. Pick the PNG. It appears in the car under Toybox.

Add it from a USB drive

  1. Format the drive as exFAT, FAT32, MS-DOS FAT, ext3 or ext4. NTFS is not supported.
  2. Create a folder called Wraps at the root of the drive — not inside another folder.
  3. Put the PNG files inside it.
  4. Make sure the drive holds no map or firmware update files. One of those on the drive and the car will not read any of it.

Apply it in the car

Open Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps and pick your design. It stays selected until you change it.

When it will not load

The car gives the same silence for every failure, so work through these in order — they are roughly sorted by how often they are the cause:

  • The file is over 1 MB. Most common by a distance. Check the file size, not the dimensions.
  • The filename is too long or has a character it rejects. Rename it to something plain like my-wrap.png and try again.
  • The drive is NTFS. Reformat it. This is the one people lose the most time to, because the drive works fine on a computer.
  • There is a firmware or map update on the drive. Remove everything except the Wraps folder.

Which cars support it

Cybertruck; Model 3 and Model 3 (2024+) in Standard, Premium and Performance; Model Y and Model Y (2025+) in Standard, Premium and Performance; Model Y L; Model S (2021+) and Model S (2025+) Plaid; Model X (2021+).

Each generation has its own template. Using the wrong one produces a file that loads perfectly and lands in the wrong places — see the model pages for which template matches your car.
